Ethnicity:

Ethnicity in media can consist of rigid stereotypes. Ethnicity is defined by a set of genetic and cultural characteristics.

Representations of Ethnic Groups:

Black people (African Descent):

  • used in 'diverse' films
  • 'gangster' stereotype (mostly for males)
  • 'criminal' stereotype (mostly for males)

Eastern-Asian people:

  • associated with martial arts
  • technologically advanced
  • intelligent

Arabic (Middle-Eastern) people:

  • religious
  • terrorists
  • villainous

White people:

  • powerful
  • lead role
  • hero

Class and Status:

Class and status can be identified in characters by...
  • houses
  • brands
  • clothes
  • gadgets
  • jewellery
  • cars

Social Class 'Pecking Order':

  1. Super rich or elite
  2. Upper class
  3. Middle class
  4. Lower class
  5. Poor
  6. Homeless

Representation of Sexuality:

Heterosexual 

  • men - respectable/monogamous/uncomfortable talking to girls
  • women - loving/pure/gold digger

Homosexual

  • men - over the top/physically fit/embarrassed of their sexuality
  • women - tom-boy/monogamous/embarrassed of their sexuality

Regional Identity

How might the audience know where the film or show is taking place without being told by a character?
