How does Cuffs address the mainstream pre-watershed audience?

Ethnicity:
Both African descent and white British characters were presented. Jake is a British male whereas Ryan is a male of African descent so this challenges the stereotype of the people of African descent being the criminals and change the audience's views as Ryan is a highly respected police officer which can show the diversity of our modern day society. This illustration of different ethnic backgrounds being used addresses the mainstream pre-watershed audience by empowering them as a whole as they may feel this representation shines a positive light and encouraging to get involved in the community.

Gender:
Ryan and Jake are seen as more superior than the female police officers, portraying that the men are more powerful than the women. However, the lead detective is Jo, who has a lot of control over the police officers which shows and challenges the stereotype of women being less superior than men. The male police officers are shown more frequently in the clip, making the women seem less important. This addresses the mainstream pre-watershed audience by helping many become what they want, without any doubts and allows positive spirits to arise.

Sexuality:
Jake Vickers is a gay policeman. He is challenging his sexuality as he is physically strong which is challenging his gay stereotype as they are generally represented as weak and feminine. He is represented deliberately as a gay person challenging his stereotypes, as today's society is more accepting than 30 years ago. For the audience, this may be quite shocking for younger viewers as the show is on at 8pm (pre-watershed) which may alarm them.
