'Propp' Theory

'Propp' Theory

Vladimir Propp's theory suggests there are 8 main characters in most films and TV series. These main characters consist of:
1. Hero - 'the good guy'
2. Villain - 'the bad guy'
3. Princess - the hero's prize at the end of his quest (the love interest)
4. Dispatcher - the one who sets the hero on his quest
5. Donor - the one who helps the hero (sometimes has a magical power)
6. Helper - the one who helps the hero
7. Her Father - the princesses father (rewards the hero and finds out who the false hero is)
8. False hero - the one who attempts to take credit for the hero's actions, trying to be with the princess

  1. Good job Benji! Please apply the theory to the 'Luther' extract we watched in class. Who is the hero, villain, helper and dispatcher?
